City Totems

Totem poles are not religious, but they do communicate aspects of a culture. The symbolic meanings of totems and their importance lies in the observer's knowledge and connection to what is portrayed on the totems. Now we have no totem poles per se in our cities but we do have poles and pillars everywhere that serve as a canvas for artists. As a visual hunter I look for these “city totems” and the art they contain.

This series is derived from poles I shot outside the famous Five Pointz industrial complex. Other city totems will be posted in the coming year.
